Vernon R. Jenkins, 75, of Frankfort, was called home to heaven on Friday morning, August 21, 2026. He passed peacefully at his home surrounded by his family following a prolonged illness. Vernon spent his final days surrounded by those he loved most.
Vernon was born Friday, February 16, 1951, in Greenfield, Ohio to the late Frank and Effie Deaton Jenkins. He later moved to Frankfort and married his beautiful and beloved wife, Molly Ackley Jenkins on April 26, 1991. Together they built a life they loved, filled with happiness, joy and love. Their fondest memories include spending every moment they could together and often traveling to Nashville, Tennessee.
Vernon devoted 30 years to being a Correctional Officer at Chillicothe Correctional Institute. He was also an active member of the Ross County Conservation League, a longtime member of the Eagles Aerie 600 and a member of the Bainbridge American Legion Post 14.
Those that knew Vernon, know that he spent his life being a devoted fan to the Cleveland Browns, Ohio State Buckeyes and the Cincinnati Reds. One of Vernon's favorite past times was spent going out on a boat fishing or traveling to various states hunting. Vernon enjoyed spending time watching his grandchildren show hogs and often spent evenings watching them play various sports. He enjoyed 35 years of camping at the Ross County Fair which he looked forward to every year. Vernon also loved his motorcycle and often went for long rides in the early mornings where he described a precious time for him to be alone and think. Vernon spent the rest of his time being in a golf league on Friday nights or being a competitive player with his friend where they often gathered to play Texas Hold'em.
Surviving Vernon is his beloved wife of 35 years, Molly Jenkins of Frankfort, one daughter; Heidi (Heath) Colburn of Kingston, one son; Jesse Jenkins of Greenfield. Also surviving is a granddaughter; Hayln Colburn and her boyfriend, Jesse Powell, granddaughter; Hadley Colburn, grandson; Blaine Jenkins, granddaughter; Bentlee Jenkins, grandson; Jake Dunn and granddaughter; Jordy Starcher and one great-granddaughter. Vernon is also survived by a special nephew; Ricky, two sisters; Mary Lynn (Randy) Nance of Washington C.H. and Norma Jean Everhart of Greenfield, one sister-in-law; Ruth Jenkins, several special friends including Bubby, Buddy, Ralph, Gummy, Chubbles, Debbie, Larry and Kenny and many other nieces, nephews, family and friends. Rex, his best dog companion will miss Vernon.
In addition to his parents, Frank and Effie Jenkins, Vernon is preceded in death by three brothers; Budd Lamerson, Dean Lamerson and Ronnie Jenkins, two brothers-in-law; Frank and Tim Ackley, his father-in-law and mother-in-law; James and Betty Ackley, Scott Starcher who was like a son to him and a best pal; John Gumm.
While Vernon is gone and those who had the blessing of meeting him will miss his presence greatly, his memory will live on with thoughts of his adventurous, competitive and joyful spririt. Vernon had a kind soul and a gift for making others smile. His memory will leave a lasting impact on those who encountered him.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at the EBRIGHT FUNERAL HOME, Frankfort with Chaplain Aaron Hines officiating. Following the service, Vernon will be laid to rest in Greenlawn Cemetery, Frankfort. Calling hours will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions are suggested to National Church Residence Hospice. The family would like to thank NCR Hospice, with special thanks to Clarissa, Sally and Aaron.
