Thomas D. Kern, 80, of Clarksburg, Ohio, passed away at the Legacy Nursing Home surrounded by his loving family. Tom was born on November 27, 1943, to Charles and Francis (Burlile) Kern, the second of identical twins. After graduating from Central High School in Columbus, Tom enlisted in the U. S. Air Force in 1963 and served our country for 5 years, first at Cheyenne, Wyoming and later at Woodbridge Air Base in Bentwaters, England.
On October 13, 1973, Tom married Marilyn Ater, his "one and only," and together they enjoyed over 50 years of marriage. He is survived by his devoted wife; brother-in-law Don Proehl; sisters-in- law Gail Stout, Denise Kern, Mary Ater and Carolyn (Mike) Hummel. Tom leaves behind the Kern, Proehl, Helmick, Cummins, Ater and Hardy nieces and nephews who enjoyed his humor and charm. Tom is also survived by many cousins, friends and his "Coughlin Family" at the GM dealership where he worked after he retired. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; father and mother -in- law, Glen and Nell Ater; sisters Sonia "Sunny" Helmick and Virginia "Ginny" Proehl; brothers Charles, Terry and Tim, his twin; brothers -in-law Harold "Harry" Helmick and Terry Ater.
Marilyn will be forever grateful for the wonderful care shown to Tom and the entire family during his illness. Tom's memories will be a blessing to all who knew and loved him.
Under the direction of the Ebright Funeral Home, visitation will take place at funeral home, on Saturday, June 1, 2024, from 5 to 8p.m.. Pastor Vera Welker will preside over the funeral at the Clarksburg United Methodist Church at 2p.m. on Sunday, June 2, with burial at Brown's Chapel Cemetery followed by a luncheon at the church. Military rites will be accorded by the Ross County Veterans Honor Guard. In the past year, Tom was thrilled to be included in the 123rd Honor Flight to Washington, D.C. and would be humbled to have donations sent to Honor Flight Columbus, PO Box 20133, Columbus, OH 43220 or the Clarksburg United Methodist Church, PO Box 92, Clarksburg, OH 43115 in his memory.
